Choppy connection when client screen size changes

I have a laptop as a Client (resolution 1600x900) that I plug into a large monitor. When I close my laptop the monitor takes over and the resolution goes way up (2560x1080). But then the mouse gets intermittently laggy - it will work fine for a few minutes, then be really laggy for a couple seconds. I was assuming that it was a network issue, but then I realized that if I left my laptop open, using the lower resolution, it (just about) never has an issue. Both my devices are running the latest Windows. Has anyone had any issues like this?
