mouse laggy on ethernet

Hi there, I've just set up my system, but I can't really use the mouse as it's just way too laggy. My server is mac mini with el capitan running, my client is win 10. I've connected them via direct ethernet, but the problem remains. I've set the ip range separate from the wifi, so it won't interfere. the keyboard works fine, as long as I don't touch the mouse. Any suggestions as to what may work? thanks!
