Synergy with two different routers?

I have recently had a new router installed so I can have a different ip on my laptop (For gaming reasons). I use synergy to play on my desktop and laptop at the same time, which has never been a problem until now. With my new router, I'm having trouble connecting them. Is it possible to connect Synergy even though they aren't on the same network? I have tried googling and tried many things and nothing seems to be working. I'm hopeless with technology so any help would be greatly appreciated! Message I'm getting: WARNING: Failed to connect to server: timed out
