Synergy Server on Linux Installation Failure [SOLVED]

Hi, Guys.

 

Trying to get Synergy 1.8.7 up and running on multiple platforms.

 

Although experienced with Windows systems, I am admittedly a "noob" with Linux (Mint 18.1 Cinnamon). I have two PCs each have Windows 10 and Linux Mint 18.1 installed (Dual boot via Grub2 installed on separate HDDs). My objective is to use PC1 (see sys info below) as Synergy Server on Linux while being able to work with PC2 running Windows 10 Pro.

 

PROBLEM:

 

Synergy version 1.8.7 error (see also error log below) in Linux:

 

"The executable /usr/bin/synergys could not be successfully started. Please

check if you have sufficient permission to run this program."

 

BACKGROUND

 

1.8.7 successfully installed in both server and client modes on Windows PCs first. I then booted PC2 into Linux, installed 1.8.7 and controlled it via Synergy 1.8.7 from Windows PC1. The problem occurred when I attempted to install 1.8.7 as a Synergy server on Linux.

 

n.b., Synergy v1.6.2 (repository version) works when both server and client are running Linux - non ssl.

 

TROUBLESHOOTING HISTORY

 

(1) Enabled firewall access on Linux.

(2) Disabled ssl

(3) Uninstalled Synergy on both Linux client and server. Then reinstalled, Server first, on Linux.

(4) Checked that Scroll Lock key is not enabled.

As I mentioned, I'm new to Linux so this workaround may be imperfect but at least everything is working.

 

First, I installed v1.8.8 rc1 on all machines. Then, I used command gksudo synergy to start synergy on the Linux Synergy server. Finally, I created a desktop shortcut from /bin/share/applications for synergy.

 

I edited the command line in the shortcut to EXEC=gksudo synergy. Now when I start Linux on the server I click on the shortcut, enter my password, and click Start on the Synergy server setup page and it works.
