App won't gain focus

Kind of weird to explain or search, so I hope I'm not overlooking someone else's answer.

I am running v1.8 server on a windows 10 laptop and v1.8 client on a mac. There a couple programs I have (Intellij, dbVisualizer) that when I click into, doesn't gain focus. I can click around but I can't type, highlight, etc.. And the only way to give the app focus is to click out of the window and then click on the top bar of the application. This is becoming quite annoying as I am constantly moving between applications and have to always remember to first click the top bar before I can select something or begin typing.

Any insight on this would be awesome. If I'm not clear I can upload a screen record or something to demonstrate.
